Gary Le Strange: Grey

Comedy Cuts, ITV2, 2006 (broadcast 2007; soundtrack recorded 2003)

Three full-length videos were edited from the day’s filming but we actually filmed five. The second was a song called I’m Japanese, filmed entirely on Gerrard Street in the heart of London’s Chinatown. It was lunchtime - some time around twelve - and before long we had gathered a small crowd of angry-looking Chinese men who looked like they seriously wanted to stab me. I was wearing a frilly shirt, full make-up and a mini kilt but I may as well have been naked. Needless to say, we wrapped this one up in a hurry and I was relieved it never got finished. Instead, we trotted off mid-afternoon to a multi-storey car park in Peckham and filmed Grey. I remember being quite unhappy with the song at the time - something to do with having sung it a thousand times in the previous few years and being completely sick of it - but Stew loved it and did a fine job with the video. I think the hat was a mistake but that was my idea. This was never shown on TV in any way at all, but was available briefly on the Comedy Cuts website as a freebie. If you ever want to visit the location, there’s a fantastic bar/restaurant right at the top of it (reviewed quite unfairly here). On the top of a multi-storey car park. Only in Peckham.
