Comedy Cuts, ITV2, 2006 (broadcast 2007; soundtrack recorded 2004)
Directed by the brilliant Stewart Lee, this video and the two that follow (Grey and
Is My Toaster Sentient?) were all filmed in a single day in October 2006 on location
in London, for the first series of Comedy Cutson ITV2. I’d been asked to do the
show but was already on a massive downer with Le Strange and had absolutely no idea
what the hell I wanted to do for it. Thankfully Stew already knew my work and called
me with a bunch of ideas for a series of pop videos, which he’d already storyboarded
in his head. This was the first one we did, some time between 8 and 10 in the morning
in Soho, and is probably the best of the bunch. In fact, I’d go so far as saying
it’s one of a handful of things I did as Le Strange which I really, truly love. If
this video turns out to be the only solid contribution I ever make to British comedy
history, I’d still be very happy. The production team at ITV liked it so much they
wanted to release it as a single to promote the series. Sadly the process of doing
so was too fiddly at the time and it never happened, but at least it got seen on
Youtube, where, thanks to a clever PR move, it got over 10,000 hits in two days.
And was never seen again.
