Origen’s Wake: Grobschnitt’s Revenge

Directed by Tim Hope, 2000

After The Wolfman, Tim started training me as an animator, employing me to create textures and 3D models for an animated series based around The Pod. At the same time, I started experimenting with my own ideas, building a rudimentary virtual version of Airedale, the town I lived in till I was seven years old, then populating it with characters based on various people I knew when I was small. Having given up on art when I was 14, my illustrative skills were primitive at best, but my eagerness to draw again resulted in something vaguely coherent. Tim became interested and encouraged me to write a story based around the main character - a boy not unlike me, now named Origen (my middle name). Together we polished up the script, recorded the voices (all me, directed by Tim) on a cheap microphone directly onto a home PC and ended up with this. Though I animated a couple of scenes myself, the bulk of the work here is Tim’s. For a while, the film was hosted on a now-defunct comedy website called Hahabonk, then it disappeared into my drawer. Which is a shame because I still think the ending is one of the best pieces of animation I’ve ever seen. Now proudly back in public for the first time in over a decade.
