Grobschnitt's Revenge

The Wolfman

Directed by Tim Hope, 1999

Though the animation itself was made in 1999, the idea behind it had a much longer gestation period, starting out as a weird, hyper-emotional short story called Chateau de Death which I wrote and recorded with Tim in 1994. This then evolved over several years into a live piece of performance art called The Wolfman, which we performed several times under the moniker of The Node (itself an offshoot of Tim’s other live project The Pod) around 97/98. This in turn became the basis for a couple of animations Tim made with artist Bartek Kubiak for BBC 2’s Comedy Nation. Which eventually turned into this piece. I had nothing to do with the animation - that was all Tim’s work - but the script was a collaborative piece we recorded over several sessions, slaving over every single word until it was perfect. The film went on to be enormously successful and massively influential, winning various awards in various countries but don’t ask me what. It also got shown on Channel 4 once but I’ve no idea when. Tim went on to be a professional director of commercials and pop videos (look here for plenty of cool examples). We revisited The Wolfman when it became an ad for Sony’s PlayStation2 in 2001.
