The Day They Came To Suck Out Our Brains was a ten-part series of comedy shorts made by Bob Pipe, Phil Whelans and James Wren for Warwick Davis’ short-lived YouTube channel, The Multiverse, in 2013. The general gist: 1950s schlock horror sci-fi with a British twist, starring just about everyone in Bob Pipe’s address book, with appearances from Richard Glover, Colin Hoult, Adam Riches, Lizzie Roper, Stephen Evans, Gemma Whelan and a massive list of other names who are all going to be quite miffed I didn’t mention them. I’m even in a couple of them myself, but my main contribution to the show was musical. I’d written bits of music for a few low-budget pilots and radio shows already, but this was my first score for an ongoing series. Thankfully, the episodes were only five minutes long, so it felt like a good way to test the water - to see if I actually had what it took to write a consistent flow of music over three months, without having to risk my actual health and sanity. The basic approach: goofy meets experimental, in a 1950s setting. I only had a bit of basic orchestral software and this was the first time I’d really let myself loose with it, so much of it tends towards plinky-plonk. But there’s a fair bit of radiophonic synth warbling, a dollop of rock & roll and the odd slice of jazz. It’s not that sophisticated - if I did this today, it’d probably be more nuanced and expressive - but it’s always positive, and I can’t help feeling nostalgically fond of this stuff. This page is a compilation of the stuff that makes me fondest.
