intruder

Intruder was a TV mini-series made by Clapperboard for Channel 5, starring Sally Lindsay, Elaine Cassidy and Helen Behan. It also reunited the core creative team behind The Ghoul – director Gareth Tunley, actor Tom Meeten and cinematographer Ben Pritchard, with me on the music. I think in the beginning we hoped the score would be more tuneful. The early demos here reflect that, with their buoyant guitar lines. But as the process went on, it became more obvious that the score had to be much darker, to reflect the murderous subject matter. By the end, the music was a nightmare collage of various different approaches, and right now probably stands as the darkest, most abstract and most experimental music I’ve ever attempted. Much of the score grew out of improvisation. I’d become fascinated with a program called Arkhis, which lets you make complex orchestral atmospheric underscores on the hoof. Over the course of a couple of days, I made about fifty short pieces with Arkhis, several of which made their way into the show in some form. There are some on this page - alongside a few electronic pieces I made for the subterranean scenes - but there’s a healthier selection here. There were tunes – I used the demos as a basis and added a couple more along the way – but they were often broken and smashed, one tune colliding with another halfway through. Some of the pieces (like FALSE FLASHBACKS and THE LIE) were thrown together like a bad jigsaw – I made recordings of separate string chords and rearranged them randomly, to echo the bad choices the characters were making. These aren’t necessarily the final broadcast cues – some are alternate mixes and others were cut from the final edit - but hopefully they’ll give you a good flavour of how the show sounds.
